CUPHAT
4th class were treated to an afternoon in the outdoors with CUPHAT. CUPHAT stands for Coastal Uplands: Heritage and Tourism and are working with DCU to go out to primary schools. The children went to Tomnafinnoge Woods with David Misstear to explore the natural environment. Here they searched for mini beasts (insects), tested the river water and sand. The children had a great day out.
Science Blast
Our 6th classes were very busy with their thinking hats on for Science Blast. After brainstorming lots of topics they could explore, they settled on the leading question of "Are Luxury Food/Drink Products Actually More Tasty Than Shop Brand Products?". Of course to research this it required a lot of taste testing which made for a great lesson up in Ms. Murphy's room. After completing various experiments to find out if luxury brands of shop brand products were more desirable, the class drew up their finding.
Unfortunately only one class could make the trip to the RDS to present the findings. Up in Dublin, Ms. Murphy's class did a fantastic job at showcasing their work to the judges and visitors. They even managed to get The Minister of Education to have a go at their blind folded taste testing! Well done to all involved and a special thank you to Ms. Murphy and Mr. O'Rourke for all their assistance with this great initiative. |
5th Class Jumble Sale
A huge congratulations to Mr. Walshe's and Ms. Phelan's 5th classes who organised a fantastic jumble sale in aid of Trócaire. Boys and girls from all classes donated lots of gorgeous toys, puzzles, jewelry, books and lots more to the cause. There were also lots of activites such as face painting, penalty shoot outs and a bake sale happening too. A lot of hard work went into the organising and running of this and we were all so impressed with how smoothly the day went. At the end of the day the money was counted and we are proud to say €2500 was raised for the worthy cause.

Debating
Well done to our debating team who represented our school fantastically this year. Under the guidance of Ms. Murphy and Ms. Phelan they explored many different topics such as climate change and developed arguments to work in their favour. The girls represented us over many Zoom calls and made it to the shield final in Kildare Education Centre. The girls finished runners up on this day and were presented with a certificate and plaque each.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal
Once again this year we took part in the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. This is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. Often these shoeboxes are the only gift that a child will receive at Christmas and the joy that they bring is incredible. Well done and thank you to all the boys and girls that brought in shoeboxes full of treats and a special thank you to Mrs. Butler who organised this within our school.

Fifth Green Flag Achieved |
Congratulations to our Green-Schools Committee on being awarded the school’s fifth green flag! This award was for the pupils’ hard work on promoting biodiversity in our school environment. We developed a 'wild and wonderful' habitat in the field at the very back of the school which is now home to foxes and rabbits and many insects. We have bug hotels, hedgehog homes, bird feeders, a nature walk, no-mow zones, wild flower borders and new trees. Many of the classes had a visit from the Heritage Expert on Biodiversity, Mr. Patrick Hunt, who informed the classes of the diverse plants, trees and animals that live in our school grounds and hedgerows. Thanks to Ms. Bernie Donegan for all her hard work in organising five Green Flags over the past 10 years. We have five 'pennants' in the school corridor representing the five green flags that the school and our hardworking committees have achieved. Our Green Flag for Biodiversity was proudly raised on September 29th 2020 by Pat Fleming and Patsy Barrett our school caretakers with the Principal, Ms. Mairead Hennessy, the Green School Organiser, Ms. Bernie Donegan and the Green School Committee. Well done to all involved both past and present. We are now working towards our SIXTH Green Flag for Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste.

Team Hope November 2021 |
Thanks to all the children, teachers, SNAs, parents and community members who sent in wonderful gifts wrapped in shoeboxes for Team Hope this year. Almost 200 shoeboxes were collected for boys and girls who may otherwise not have had a Christmas gift this December. The generosity of our families and school communities is just amazing. Thank you to everyone who contributed to Team Hope this year. Your kindness is much appreciated.

Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2016
6th class students recently participated in the annual Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal for the first time under the guidance of Mr. Walshe and Ms. Hannafin. It was a resounding success as a total of 52 shoeboxes full of a variety of practical and unique gifts were packed to capacity and recently donated to the Carlow Collection Centre. Team Hope provides Christmas gifts to some of the poorest children in eastern Europe and Africa each year. All information about this great cause can be found at www.teamhope.ie
It is hoped that this will be the start of an annual project for our 6th class students and they were extremely kind and innovative with their thoughts and gifts. We are all very proud of them. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed in anyway.

Receiving the Flag Ceremony - November 2015
In November members of the Defence forces came to visit our school. They talked to us about 1916 and presented us with the National flag. The band played songs as the members of the Defence Force entered the hall. They were impressed with our artwork and our music. The whole school sang Amhráin na Bhfiann. We all enjoyed the celebration. On the 15th March we will raise the flag outside our school. |

Witchety Walk - Halloween in Scoil Naomh Iósaf
We went on a Witchety Walk for Halloween! We chanted Witchety Walk chants and marched around the school grounds. Everyone had a great time. Try our chants:
Witchety Walk
Witchety Walk, Witchety walk, We are on a witchety walk. Witchety Walk, Witchety walk, We are on a witchety walk. Halloween, Halloween, Creepy costumes make you scream. Big black cats and pointy hats, Ghosts and ghouls and vampire bats. Witchety Walk, Witchety walk, We are on a witchety walk. Witchety Walk, Witchety walk, We are on a witchety walk! |
Ms. Donegan wrote this chant for us:
Balto Witches We are the Balto witches, on our broomsticks high, Screeching and cackling across the sky, Come eat from our cauldron, all slimy and sloppy, Frog’s tongues, crows’ feet, eyeballs so hoppy! |
